Point picks Raspberry Saison for newest “big beer” Belgian-style ale expands Whole Hog Limited Release Brewmaster’s Series
STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Add a hint of raspberry flavor to a Belgian-style Saison and you’ve got the latest “big beer” from Stevens Point Brewery’s Whole Hog Limited Release Brewmaster’s Series.
Whole Hog Raspberry Saison is now available in four-packs of 12-ounce longneck bottles and kegs wherever Point beers are sold.
Whole Hog Raspberry Saison is the fifth brew in Point Brewery’s Whole Hog Limited Release Brewmaster’s Series, dedicated to delivering big, bold beers to the most discerning craft-beer aficionados. The Whole Hog lineup, which styles vary throughout the year, includes Whole Hog Six-Hop India Pale Ale and Whole Hog Imperial Pilsner, as well as Whole Hog Russian Imperial Stout and Whole Hog Pumpkin Ale.
Brewing Belgian-style Saison Saison ales are a specialty of Wallonia, the French-speaking southern part of Belgium. Whole Hog Raspberry Saison is brewed in the Saison style, hand-crafted with a variety of barley malts, including 2-row, Pilsen, Munich and special roasted malts. The new brew, with an alcohol content of 7.2% by volume, also uses Cluster and Willamette hops, a special Belgian ale yeast perfect for brewing Saison and a touch of natural raspberry flavor. The result is a refreshingly tart, spicy beer with a fruity hint of raspberry, said Ken Carlson, Stevens Point Brewery’s Director of Brewing. “We chose raspberry as the best fruit fit with the Saison style,” he said. “The raspberry delivers an earthy complement to the herbal spiciness of the beer. The roasted malts make the beer a little more complex than the typical Saison.”
Whole Hog Raspberry Saison pairs especially well with seafood, Carlson noted. “It also makes an interesting dessert beer after a meal.”
Point Brewery’s Belgian Beers Whole Hog Raspberry Saison is also Point’s third Belgian-style brew, joining Point Belgian White, a Belgian-style wheat ale, and St. Benedict’s Winter Ale, an abbey-style dark ale. Belgian imports and Belgian-style beers from American craft brewers continue to grow in popularity among specialty beer drinkers, according to Joe Martino, Operating Partner of the Stevens Point Brewery.
“Our other Belgian-style beers have been successful and the Whole Hog beers are selling exceptionally well, too, so it makes sense for us to choose the Saison style to expand the Whole Hog portfolio,” Martino said. “Saison is a true specialty of Belgium, which has a long and colorful brewing tradition. Whole Hog Raspberry Saison is a unique product; one taste and you will agree.”
Point’s hand-crafted specialty beers The Whole Hog Limited Edition Brewmaster’s Series represents the epitome of the brewmaster’s art and crowns the Stevens Point Brewery’ s specialty portfolio, which also includes four hand-crafted seasonal specialty beers and six year-round brands.
The seasonal specialty lineup features Point Oktoberfest, a Bavarian-style Märzen beer for the fall; St. Benedict’s Winter Ale, a rich, dark Belgian abbey-style ale for winter; Point Einbock, a Bavarian-style bock beer for spring; and Point Nude Beach Summer Wheat, a crisp, refreshing wheat ale for the summer.
Point Special Lager, an American-style pilsner that won the gold medal in the Great American Beer Festival’s American Premium Lager category in 2003, leads the year-round beers. Year-round specialty beers include Point Amber Classic, an American-style amber lager; Point Belgian White, a Belgian-style wheat ale flavored with orange peel and coriander; Point Horizon Wheat, an unfiltered wheat ale; Point Cascade Pale Ale, a hoppy American-style pale ale brewed with Cascade hops from Washington’s Yakima Valley; and Point Burly Brown, an American-style brown ale.
