Bier Brewery Takes Home Brew Bracket Tap Trophy in Tournament of Indiana Stouts
Indianapolis, IN – Brew Bracket hosted its second tournament of craft brews at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on Saturday, October 8th. Almost 200 Hoosiers joined together at the fairgrounds to blindly taste variations of stouts from some of Indiana’s finest craft breweries.
At a Brew Bracket event, brewers are randomly seeded into a bracket of 16 and participants are given two tasting glasses to visit stations and blindly taste two beers at a time in a head to head comparison. Participants vote on their favorites and the popular vote of the crowd moves a brewer through the tournament tasting event. The location of the brewers on the bracket, the results of the vote, and ultimately, the fan favorite brewer, are all unveiled at the end of the event.
Featured brewers at the October 8th event included: Barley Island – Noblesville, IN Bee Creek – Brazil, IN Bier Brewery – Indianapolis, IN Bloomington Brewing– Bloomington, IN Brugge Brasserie – Indianapolis IN Figure Eight Brewing – Valparaiso, IN Flat 12 Bierwerks – Indianapolis, IN Half Moon Restaurant and Brewery – Kokomo, IN Lafayette Brewing – Lafayette, IN Rock Bottom College Park – Indianapolis, IN Rock Bottom Downtown – Indianapolis, IN Triton Brewing – Indianapolis, IN Twisted Crew – Seymour, IN Upland Brewing – Bloomington, IN
Each brewer brought their own take on the style of stout. The event featured some incredible variations including coffee stouts, Irish stouts, oatmeal stouts and milk stouts. Brewers are able to utilize the event as an opportunity to introduce variations on their popular styles to see where the crowd votes.
The four semi-finalists at the event include Twisted Crew, Triton Brewing Company, Flat 12 Bierwerks, and Bier Brewery. Darren Connor of Bier Brewery won the people’s choice vote and the Brew Bracket tap trophy with his “Fuggit” stout, a full bodied stout containing a bit of everything from his ingredient arsenal. “It’s a nice heavy, thick, chewy…just an awesome stout all around. We threw just about every one of our grains that we use at Bier Brewery into that stout” explained Darren in advance of the competition. Jon Lang of Triton Brewing was the runner up with his Bourbon Barrel Deadeye Stout.
Each Brew Bracket event kicks off with “Buying a Round”, where a featured charity receives a donation from the event’s ticket sales. Movember Indy was the recent recipient of $1,000 to help their local Movember campaign. Movember is a charity that raises funds for cancers affecting men. During the month of Movember, men grow mustaches (mo’s) to support the cause and raise awareness and funds.
The Brew Bracket event is an outstanding opportunity for craft beer fans of all experience levels to come out and enjoy a tasting event built around one specific style. A true beer connoisseur (even a cicerone) can hone their pallet through blind tasting of some new variations on popular styles. And a novice brew fan that is trying to learn more about the local craft scene can use the blind tasting event as an opportunity to expand their horizons and figure out new personal preferences.
Brew Bracket is also proud to be recognized as the only tasting event in Indiana (and possibly the world) to feature two tasting glasses for a seamless side by side comparison. Brew Bracket will return to Indiana in the spring for a new event featuring a new style, as voted by the fans.
