Ore Dock Brewing Company to Open Thursday, May 24, 2012
Marquette, Michigan - Ore Dock Brewing Company will open its doors to the public for the first time on Thursday, May 24, after months of renovation to a former auto garage located at 114 West Spring Street in downtown Marquette. The microbrewery's tasting room will be open for limited hours from 5 pm until midnight both Thursday and Friday. Six original beers, including a Porter, IPA, Belgian Blonde, and Saison- a farmhouse-style ale - will be on tap. After Thursday and Friday, regular business hours will be Sunday, Tuesday- Wednesday 12pm-11pm and Thursday-Saturday 12pm-12am.
"After years of being craft beer enthusiasts and homebrewers, we're excited to be a part of the growing Upper Peninsula craft beer scene right here in Marquette, a community we are proud to call home," said Andrea Pernsteiner, owner and Marquette resident.
Over 30 jobs, mainly local, were provided during construction, and the brewery has two full-time and two part-time employees with plans to add more positions once the business is open. Reclaimed materials were incorporated throughout the renovation, including flooring and barn beams, as well as polishing the existing concrete floor. Construction continues on the second floor, which will be open to the public this summer.
Marquette's newest microbrewery is the brainchild of residents Wes and Andrea Pernsteiner. Inspiration came during a 4,000 mile road trip out west where the couple planned their itinerary based on breweries they wanted to visit. Upon returning home, the Pernsteiner’s spent two years creating a business plan and setting the groundwork for a microbrewery that would offer a clear link to the Marquette community, with an emphasis on utilizing local products and fostering the local art and music scene. The vision of Ore Dock Brewing company is to be a place for people to come together to enjoy unique, quality craft beer.
The Pernsteiners, along with fellow owners Wade DePas, Corey and Kathleen Stiles, and Nick and Marina VanCourt, of Marquette, share in ownership.
Head Brewer Nick VanCourt has been brewing American, English, and Belgian style beers for Thursday's opening, with an emphasis on staying true to style. With six beers currently available, plans call for up to 10 beers to be on tap. A Daggett, Michigan native, VanCourt has worked in several Wisconsin breweries and is a graduate of the World Brewing Academy, studying in Chicago and Munich, Germany.
Plans for an official grand opening event will be announced this summer upon completion of the second floor renovation. The second floor will have space available for live music, community events and private parties, additional seating, and a second bar.
