| New Featured Brewer article in the works 05/05/2007 From your faithful MidwestMicroBrews publisher, Michael: Last weekend my future wife and I visited the guys at Central Waters Brewing in Amherst, Wisconsin. Kathryn and I sat down with Brewer/Owner Paul Graham and poured back a few while we talked about their continually growing business. This brewery is growing at an amazing rate. They can barely keep up with the high demand. Once you try one of their beers, you'll understand why--they're putting out some of the greatest beers in Wisconsin. We left with a great selection of their offerings. The "roundtable" got together last night to write up our humble reviews. We're in the process of deciphering our scribbles, but hope to have a new Featured Brewer article and reviews posted within the next couple of weeks. We'll keep you posted! Cheers! Stevens Point introducing 'Nude Beach' beer 04/30/2008 From the The Business Journal of Milwaukee... Stevens Point Brewery is going clothing optional this summer with the introduction of the new seasonal specialty brew Point Nude Beach Summer Wheat. The Stevens Point brewery will begin offering the new beer May 1. It describes the new seasonal as a "unfiltered wheat ale" that's "brewed with 'au naturel' raw white wheat, malted red wheat and specialty barley malts. "Wheat beers represent one of the most popular segments of the 8-million-barrel U.S. craft beer market and have recently enjoyed double-digit sales growth in many regions, including the Midwest where Point sales are strong," said Joe Martino, operating partner at Stevens Point Brewery. The brewery's other seasonal beers are Point Oktoberfest, Einbock and St. Benedict's Winter Ale. Point brands also include Point Special Lager, Point Classic Amber, Point Cascade Pale Ale, Point Belgian White and Point Horizon Wheat. I mean we REALLY love beer. We have a great appreciation for those out there who take the time and effort to brew their own. So, after much deliberation, we've decided to give it a try ourselves. We're starting on a really small scale. To double our chances of success, we purchased both The Beer Machine and Coopers Microbrewery Kit. Both of these are pretty simple to use, from what we hear. Also, both companies are kind enough to advertise with us and when you help keep our office lights on, you have our support. We'll be starting with a different style for each kit. We're going to go with a Czech Pilsner with The Beer Machine and a Stout with Coopers Microbrewery Kit. We have no idea how this is going to turn out, but it's worth a shot, right? Cheers! Michael and Staff Featured Brewer and Reviews Now Online 04/14/2008 Finally! After working out a few things with our web-host, and a complete redesign of the page, we are pleased to announce that our new Featured Brewer article and Reviews are up. Featured is The Grumpy Troll of Mount Horeb, Wisconsin. We were fortunate enough to make it to the Madison area recently and had the opportunity to check out this little gem of a brewpub. We have also debuted a new feature on our Reviews page: Notes from the Newbie. MidwestMicroBrews' very own beer newbie Patrick gives you his take on the beers reviewed. He may be a newbie, but his reviews are quite insightful. Check it out and let us know what you think. Cheers! Michael New Featured Brewer Coming Soon! 03/31/2008 The crew of MidwestMicroBrews has returned from our visit to the Madison area. In Mount Horeb, we were able to visit with Brewmaster Mark "The Captain" Duchow and taste a wide variety of the beers offered at The Grumpy Troll. If you have not yet had the chance to visit them, we would highly recommend it. Mark is one of those guys who defines the word Brewmaster. Scheduling issues prevented us from being able to visit with the folks from The Great Dane and Ale Asylum. We're hopeful that we'll be able to reschedule these visits. We are currently working on our Featured Brewer article and reviews for The Grumpy Troll. Check back in a few days for those! Cheers! Michael I've always suspected... 03/20/2008 From Newsmax.com Health Alerts... Beer Fights Cancer Researchers are always looking for the magic bullet to kill cancer, and now they may have found it in a surprising place — a glass of beer! (Who knew?) It turns out that hops, which is the flavor component of beer, contains a cancer-fighting compound called xanthohumol. Xanthohumol turns out to be toxic to several kinds of human cancer, including prostate, ovarian, breast, and colon. Further, it inhibits enzymes that can activate the development of cancer, and also helps detoxify carcinogens. It even seems to slow down tumor growth in the early stages. Scientists are trying to produce hops that contain even more xanthohumol, and the Germans are racing to develop a “health” beer. But wait – there’s more! Other compounds in hops are potent phytoestrogens which may help with post-menopausal hot flashes and also prevent osteoporosis. Beers that provide the most benefits contain the most hops, and include strong brews such as ale, stout, and porter. In general, the darker the beer, the better. For those who can’t stand beer, herbal supplements made from hops contain the highest concentrations of beneficial elements. MidwestMicroBrews on the News! 02/21/2008 Our founder and President-of-sorts, Michael was on the morning news of WFRV in Green Bay today to talk about the website. While this was his first interview, Michael feels that if it takes looking like a fool to spread the word about MidwestMicroBrews.com, he is happy to do so. Just don't make him get up at 5 am again. Check it out here. |
