Wisconsinites welcome back Schlitz... Staff of MidwestMicroBrews: slightly dismayed 07/02/2008 Don't people know the great craft beer available in Wisconsin? Sigh. From United Press International...
Schlitz, the beer that made Milwaukee famous -- to borrow from an ad campaign -- is selling out in its hometown with its comeback formula, retailers said.
year, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported Wednesday.
the U.S. Civil War. The new Schlitz is brewed by MillerCoors LLC in Eden, N.C., and sold in bottles, but that didn't stop sales from taking off in Milwaukee, the newspaper reported. Beer Capitol Distributing Inc., which distributes the beer in Milwaukee County, started with 30 sellers, many of whom quickly ran out, the newspaper said. Ray's Liquor, in Wauwatosa, Wis., received 70 cases, which sold out in one day, manager Roy Mueller said. "That's quite amazing," he said, expecting his next shipment will be rationed to about 40 customers he has on a waiting list. "We'll probably allocate a six-pack apiece," he said. The Rocky Mountain states have long been on the leading edge of the craft beer movement, and there are craft brewers large and small that are putting out some truly excellent beers. We are still working with our service provider to fully establish the site on its proper domain name. As for now, you can be instantly linked to the current site by typing in RockyMountainMicroBrews.com, or by clicking here. Cheers! New microbrewery in the works in Madison 05/13/2008 The great beer city of Madison Wisconsin will soon be home to a unique brewpub. Hoping for an opening date in May of 2009, Re-Public Brewpub will be one of the only organic microbrewers in the Midwest. Check out their blog here to follow their progress. New Featured Brewer article in the works 05/05/2008 From your faithful MidwestMicroBrews publisher, Michael: Last weekend my future wife and I visited the guys at Central Waters Brewing in Amherst, Wisconsin. Kathryn and I sat down with Brewer/Owner Paul Graham and poured back a few while we talked about their continually growing business. This brewery is growing at an amazing rate. They can barely keep up with the high demand. Once you try one of their beers, you'll understand why--they're putting out some of the greatest beers in Wisconsin. We left with a great selection of their offerings. The "roundtable" got together last night to write up our humble reviews. We're in the process of deciphering our scribbles, but hope to have a new Featured Brewer article and reviews posted within the next couple of weeks. We'll keep you posted! Cheers! Stevens Point introducing 'Nude Beach' beer 04/30/2008 From the The Business Journal of Milwaukee... Stevens Point Brewery is going clothing optional this summer with the introduction of the new seasonal specialty brew Point Nude Beach Summer Wheat. The Stevens Point brewery will begin offering the new beer May 1. It describes the new seasonal as a "unfiltered wheat ale" that's "brewed with 'au naturel' raw white wheat, malted red wheat and specialty barley malts. "Wheat beers represent one of the most popular segments of the 8-million-barrel U.S. craft beer market and have recently enjoyed double-digit sales growth in many regions, including the Midwest where Point sales are strong," said Joe Martino, operating partner at Stevens Point Brewery. The brewery's other seasonal beers are Point Oktoberfest, Einbock and St. Benedict's Winter Ale. Point brands also include Point Special Lager, Point Classic Amber, Point Cascade Pale Ale, Point Belgian White and Point Horizon Wheat. Beer Fights Cancer Researchers are always looking for the magic bullet to kill cancer, and now they may have found it in a surprising place — a glass of beer! (Who knew?) It turns out that hops, which is the flavor component of beer, contains a cancer-fighting compound called xanthohumol. Xanthohumol turns out to be toxic to several kinds of human cancer, including prostate, ovarian, breast, and colon. Further, it inhibits enzymes that can activate the development of cancer, and also helps detoxify carcinogens. It even seems to slow down tumor growth in the early stages. Scientists are trying to produce hops that contain even more xanthohumol, and the Germans are racing to develop a “health” beer. But wait – there’s more! Other compounds in hops are potent phytoestrogens which may help with post-menopausal hot flashes and also prevent osteoporosis. Beers that provide the most benefits contain the most hops, and include strong brews such as ale, stout, and porter. In general, the darker the beer, the better. For those who can’t stand beer, herbal supplements made from hops contain the highest concentrations of beneficial elements. From The Southern of Southern Illinois... This Fourth of July, join the craft beer revolution By Brent Stewart, The Southern If you recall the events of the Boston Tea Party leading up to the American Revolution this Fourth of July, try throwing your cases of plain old, manufactured beer overboard and go for something different. When planning an Independence Day party, try checking into the quickly expanding American craft beer movement for your drinks of choice. Rob Gallegly of Carbondale is a big fan of microbrews, and is a regular on Web sites such as beerphilosopher.com, Beer Advocate, the Aleuminati and the Church of Beer. Despite being a big fan of stouts and porters, for this holiday, he'd look for a beer of a different shade. "Being a summer holiday, I'd go with something a little lighter, like maybe an unfiltered wheat or the Sam Adams summer beers, something that's seasonal for this part of the year," Gallegly said. "The darkest I would go this time of year would be an amber." The Samuel Adams line of brews would be an obvious choice for a party on the fourth. Gallegly is fond of beer from Dogfish Head, and he'd love to get a hold of a Terrapin Rye Ale. "It's got a real good, crisp flavor," he said. "It's even got a bit more crispness than the typical India Pale Ale." Other options might be more "fruity" beers. Close to home, Leinenkugel has a raspberry unfiltered wheat beer. Just back from Seattle, Gallegly recommends Pyramid Breweries Apricot Weizen Ale. There's also a Wild Blue blueberry lager. "Most people would cringe at the thought of a blueberry beer, but it's got a decent flavor," Gallegly said. You also want to have a good "utility beer," something everyone can enjoy, like a pilsner. Schlafly beer out of St. Louis has a great tasting pilsner, which would be good for someone not ready to give up their Bud or Miller products. Greg Karayiannis, manager of Pinch Penny Liquors in Carbondale said the microbrew market is growing. "The most popular would probably be the more mainstream of the craft brews: Sam Adams, Goose Island, Redhook, things like that," he said. Products from The New Belgium Brewing Co. in Colorado, such as Fat Tire, have recently made their way to Southern Illinois and have already become very popular. Although he is a big fan of Butte Creek organic beers and Sierra Nevada products, Karayiannis recommended Boulevard "Zon" witbeer, along with seasonal summer ales as a good Fourth of July choice. "Some of them have a real mild citrus flavor; usually a lighter grain load or different kind of hop," he said. "Be adventurous, this being the Fourth of July, everyone think 'hey, we're celebrating America's independence,' but that came out of a revolution," Gallegly said. "I'd encourage people to jump on the beer revolution. Instead of going with the mass-produced, rubber-stamped, try this beer. Go for something unusual, different and tasty." brent.stewart@thesouthern.com / 351-5074 Wisconsinites welcome back Schlitz...
