Matilda Belgian Style Ale

Here in California, Spring has arrived. With it, comes
warm weather, long days, and a thirst for a more
refreshing beer. This is where
Goose Island's Matilda
is a welcome newcomer to the Golden State. Golden in
color with a “
brett” spike, Matilda truly is a warm
weather treat.

Matilda is quite the beautiful beer. Lying between golden and amber, the beer is strikingly clear. When you're done
admiring this beer in the glass you'll notice the aroma of this unique ale. Dried lemon peel leads the way followed by
pepper coming from a combination of alcohol and dry spicy hop notes.

When your patience breaks down and you finally take a sip you're met with a beer that challenges your palate but invites
you to drink more. As with the aroma, lemon, pepper and alcohol come to the front, with a pith like tartness to the beer
that lingers into the finish. A bouquet of fruit hides behind these intense flavors giving Matilda depth to go along with a
full body that coats the mouth without overwhelming it. Smack your lips and taste the bite of the “brett”creep out from
the corners of your mouth. This is a ploy Matilda uses to trick you into drinking more, to soothe the sour with a dose of
refreshing Belgian ale. I suggested falling for this trick repeatedly.

Matilda is an interesting beer. Falling somewhere between a Saison, Golden and Tripel, the overall impression is
definitely Belgian. Matilda lingers in my mind as lemony, spicy, dry and tart and makes me long for
a wedge of cheese I
had finished last week. Goose Island's Matilda is a welcome gift to the west coast from the heartland and I look forward to
more Goose Island brews making their way to us.
